Frieren: Beyond Journey's End! Episode 18 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

 *FIRST-CLASS HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

We finally make it to the big city and just in time for the First-Class Mage Exam! It's a good thing we made it on time, considering it's a "once in three years" experience!

New characters, a new "trial," and Frieren and Fern are separated for the first time since the start of the series...can they both pass the exam? I'm SO excited to see how this turns out!

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End! Episode 18 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

Hahaha, there we have it – Sein couldn’t come with us because he’d be disappointed in the mage selection! That does beg the question of why there aren’t older mages – unless they’ve passed because they’re human (and have died of old age) or if they’ve been killed off? Definitely creates a slightly sinister undertone that I’ll talk about in a future discussion. I’m guessing maybe like you said, that the party had to help her seal him or hold him off, so she counted that as a “loss.” The elf beating her – I have my thoughts on that. And I’m super curious if that means there just aren’t that many elves left, if the demon king tried to hunt them down or kill them off (and that’s why Flamme told her to stay hidden all that time until she was strong enough), or some other reason. I’m sure the show, knowing how it is at this point, is going to give us answers! Thank you for the comment and kind words! Excited for the weeks to come!

Stark and Fern being reminders to Frieren of Himmel is definitely sweet! :) And we get to see Kraft again! YAY! And yeah, Ubel seems to write Kraft off easily as an "old man," whereas Kraft seems to get her pretty quickly -- I love that connection between Kraft and Frieren! Thank you for the comment and kind words! Excited for next week!

I enjoyed seeing that Kraft beating up the bandits was actually just him saving their lives by taking them out before Ubel had the chance to engage with them "defending herself" (as if a mage who can kill exam proctors would need to defend themselves against mere insects) and kill them. I had the sense Ubel probably could not gauge Kraft's difficulty level too easily, especially after he sees right through her saying she has the eyes of a killer. Love the "Himmel-isms" earning head pats, and that the only reason Stark and Fern are kept in Frieren's party are so they can on occasion remind her of Himmel haha. Thanks for the reaction.

Throughout this series they've focused on how training your mana and age is important, hence why Frieren is so powerful (and demons like Qual/Aura). But all these mages seem so young, we have like only one older bearded dude? I would have suspected to see more ancient (in human terms) wizards with beards down to their knees here, and why not a sexy older woman or two? Sein would be so disappionted with the selection of candidates for first class mage here. On the other hand this episode does confirm many other things have a great impact on how formidable a mage is. With Frieren having been bested eleven times, and i'm guessing only that one elf having a chance of being older than Frieren, thus showing that age isn't everything. I'm not sure how the Qual fight went but he was magically sealed so i still think it must have been Frieren doing that, and she came back 80 years later and vanquished him... i would have that down as a win. But maybe she wouldn't have managed to even seal him without the rest of the hero's party and if she can't solo someone it ain't a win in Frieren's book? If there are around 2000 mages and they seem much more common than elves are we to infer there are far fewer elves than that left? Seems Frieren has met many mages but we know before Kraft it had been 400 years since she had encountered another elf (perhaps the one that bested her?). Elven numbers probably isn't even close to tripple digits at this point... unless many are hiding and not interacting with rest of civilization/society at all.
