Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Episode 7 FULL LENGTH Reaction!

*FRUITS OF KNOWLEDGE-LADEN HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This episode was a double-whammy of character development! We finally get some backstory with Kyouko and what drove her to make a contract with Kyubey, and the comparison and contrasting with her and Sayaka!

Speaking of which, Sayaka is going through the WRINGER -- and I've never been more empathetic or more concerned for her character than now!

YES, something is up with it. I think I talked about that in a discussion -- I can't remember which episode it's for -- but Madoka out here adding in all the terrifying imagery and subtle creepiness! Thank you for noting that and pointing it out and the comment!

Hi! I ran out of episodes on YouTube, so I came over here to annoy everyone 😜 There’s a small translation mistake in this episode. When Kyoko is talking about her father the subtitles say that he was trying to start a new religion, which makes it sound like he was going to start a cult. The words she actually used translate directly as “dogma” (or maybe creed). He wasn’t trying to start a new religion, he was trying to reform the religion from within. (Also, when the subtitles said that he was really kind and honest, she actually said he was “too kind” and “too honest”… probably better translated as “kind/honest to a fault”.)

I just realized in the intro that when Madoka is laying down with the cat. Two drops of rain conveniently hits both of her eyes and run down looking like she is crying. Like one of the only visual hints that something isn't right with the intro.

That scene with Sayaka weeping was SO POWERFUL! So intense and hit to one’s core! Sayaka’s character has gone on a roller coaster with me – she’s very frustrating and not my favorite, but as I’ll note in future episodes, I do respect her character! The animation of that last scene was heartbreaking and beautifully done – it was very hard to watch. And yes, finally getting Kyouko’s backstory! And yes, much of your comment I talked about in the discussion with her, so I agree! 🙂 That’s a great overview of each of them, though! I definitely love this show and how it’s talking about all these aspects of women growing up that are very relatable! And thank you for clarifying with Madoka at the end - I’m not the “best” at recognizing Japanese voices off screen, especially girl voices, so I appreciate that, the kind words, and the comment! Onward to the next episode!

The scene of Kyubey hurting Sayaka shows how out of touch with humanity he is and is really creepy, indeed! I did love that we got Kyouko’s backstory and how she’s finally connected with Sayaka – Kyouko is definitely tsundered-coded! 😛She definitely reminds me of Ymir and Sayaka as Historia is fascinating!! I wish Sayaka was more “royal” like Mami seemed! But I TOTALLY see what you mean about the selfishness being a “front” for them to try and keep themselves from getting hurt! I definitely love that trope as well! I agree, though; her stubbornness is frustrating to me! I definitely will talk more about her in future episodes! 🙂Thanks for the comment and kind words! *nervous laugh* onto the next episode!

Kyubey wants to make a point to Sayaka by hurting her through her soul gem, but he keeps going and going even though she has already fallen down and cried. That scene is just so creepy urghhhh The conversation between Kyouko and Sayaka is just so good!! Kyouko's backstory made her previous actions make so much sense. And we see now she is actually growing to care for Sayaka. Like she tried to kill her one episode ago, and now she gave up the witch at the end for Sayaka to hunt, and even jump in to save her. I love that you compare Kyouko to Ymir in AOT, I also thought of that! I would also compare Sayaka to Historia. They act very differently of course, since Historia tried to be sweet all the time at the beginning, not like Sayaka. But as Kyouko is similar to Ymir in her desire to be selfish, Sayaka is similar to Historia in her desire to be selfless. Both relationships show that they are very different but also very similar, so one tries to reach out to the other, not letting the other repeat the mistake they made (Ymir to Historia, Kyouko to Sayaka). But this action shows that they are not inherently selfish, the selfishness is just a front they put up to protect themselves from being hurt. Characters that are opposite turn out to be similar and reaching out to the others is one of my favorite trope ever, so I'm going insane about them haha. As for Sayaka, her stubbornness is the thing that makes her frustrating, but also endearing to me. When she said she could use this power for good, and that she would never regret her wish. Despite everything, I desperately want to believe her, want that to be true. But even though she should probably not live completely selfishly like Kyouko, is feeling no regret always a good thing? Making mistakes and feeling regrets are what make us grow as a person right? Especially for someone as young as her. Her action at the end can be seen as a form of dissociation. Trying to detach yourself from reality so you can cope with the situation feels so real as a mental health issue, even if this is a fantasy fighting scene. I also love that different from the previous witch's labyrinths being very colorful, this scene is so minimal in its use of colors. It emphasizes the focus on Sayaka's emotions alone.

Holy... I've already watched the show many many times, but the scene where Sayaka weeps with Madoka made me cry hard again... "How can I ask him to hold this dead body ? How can I ask him to kiss my cold lips ?" These lines hit like a bloody orbital strike. Overall Sayaka's character (and truely every single one of the girls) is so complex and fascinating. As you did notice in the earlier episodes, she does have flaws and is at times a bit selfish, but she is also the one that punishes herself the hardest every time she slips up. She basically has such high moral standards - wanting to be an irreproachable hero - that even she cannot reach them, and it's normal, no human can be perfect ! It's not a healthy standard to long for ! The fact that at the end she uses the "trick" that Kyubey taught her in order to forget the pain is obviously because she wants to forget her psychological pain as well, not only the physical of fighting witches. The animation style of the scene is also absoluetely gorgeous. . In this episode we also have a massive insight into Kyoukou's life and philosophy. In addition to adding a lot of depth to her character and kind of recontextualizing her actions (though not excusing them, she's still kinda unhinged attacking people randomly), I really love how her life philosophy is one that not only makes sense but is also really relatable. In many animes (or just fictions) the bad guys' logic is like so obviously flawed or unrelatable, but until a few years ago I literally myself had Kyoukou's philosophy : "If I do everything myself and don't involve other people, then everything is my fault and I only get what I deserve." It's obviously not healthy way of living and I was quite depressed when I used to think that (I'm much better now, dw ^^), but I mean is there a single girl in this group that isn't clinically depressed ? Mami had abandonment issues and was hiding her pain behind a tough exterior. Sayaka is her biggest critic and therefore harshly punishes herself even when she doesn't deserve it. Kyoukou isolates herself completely by living only for herself because she's basically traumatised that her attempt at helping others ended up in such a tragic way. Homura has visibly fully disassociated and detached from her feelings. And even Madoka seems to have some self-worth issues (when at the beginning she wants to become a magical girl just because she thinks that way she'll be worth something). But that's why this show is so great. Despite its supernatural elements I find it deeply relatable and extremely well written. PS : The desperate "Stop, please stop" was definitely Madoka's voice at the end.
