*FANTASTIC HEADPHONE WARNINGS*

This is the legit first anime I ever saw and set the stage for my love of anime to come....does it hold up? Is it just as bonkers as I remember it? Find out for yourself as I re-watch this classic with our favorite pink-haired unicorn!

NOTE: There was a LOT of technical difficulties that arose with this reaction, so it's there, but sadly there are no subtitles. I apologize ahead of time!

The Fantastic Adventures of Unico: Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON EXCLUSIVE!

It definitely feels like it's a stand alone feature -- I agree it's not reliant on the OVA -- And yes, there is such a charm to this feature! And yes, the idea of losing a friend and being lonely and forms of grief -- Tezuka does a great job of applying these rather "adult" themes to a "children's movie." :) I really love the trio of Unico, Beezle, and Katie! He definitely feels not like a mary sue or a blank slate - Unico has such heart amidst tragedy -- I feel for him! That's an interesting question about what I felt as a child! I remember feeling sad that Unico had to keep being taken away -- it felt like a kid that constantly had to move from school to school and could never make a concrete set of friends. I also as a kid loved that Beezle was such a trouble-maker, but became Unico's friend. Katie was such a fun character and I agree, the English Dub really made her character SUPER quirky and cat-like! Ahh, I love the animation in this -- especially with the castle -- as someone that likes animation, I feel you will really have a fun time with the next movie because I had NO clue what to expect and it floored me! Thank you for the comment!

So I saw this movie before you told me there was an OVA but I didnt feel lost or anything having not watching it first and feel like it works as a stand alone feature. Watching this at the age of 36 with no nostalgia for Unico, i found it entertaining, charming and quite astute on how it depicts loneliness and building friendships and the loss of those friendships and how this can be a form of grief. The two characters Unico meets, Beezel and Katy were such fun and interesting foils to Unico and each show how their selfishness came from their loneliness and when Unico befriended them and showed them selfless love which makes Unico a beautiful character we dont get often or is criticized for being too good and thus boring but Unico isnt a boring goody too shoes but a really tragic soul who has to eternally suffer loneliness since he forgets his friends each time he’s wisked away by the Wind spirit. I cant image what I would’ve understood if I watched this as a child like you did. Did you see or feel these things when you saw this film as a kid? The animation too is gorgeous and Im a sucker for that late 70’s 80’s look. I watched the dub but felt that the acting was just as charming and enjoyable and my favorite was Katy, whose voice actress really brought out that cat personality with her performance. Looking forward to watching the next one ☺️

Ahhh thank you!! I cannot BELIEVE that the old DVD's would not let me screen capture! I was FLOORED! But I'm glad I at least got it to work -- there won't be any problems with the other movies! I LOVE the wind designs as well! The TGCF lover in me wants to imagine BlackWater as the Night Wind now alongside the Wind Master! This series isn't afraid of the 70s/80's psychedelic aesthetic -- it feels so nostalgic! That Ghost DeBaron scene has stuck with me since childhood as well! And yesss, it's quite creepy now in retrospect, to justify Unico spearing him! The dub is actually really nice for this film -- it's the first I saw and it's stuck with me, especially the main trio's voices! Thank you for the comment! OH, NEXT WEEK is a TREAT! I can't wait!

Loved the reaction & discussion! I ended up watching the reaction without subs and then the English dub. Btw, I’m sorry, but the struggle notes were hilarious 😂 – the wonder of older DVDs which sometimes screencapture software cannot handle, DRM is also different from one lot to the next, so I’m not surprised you had so many different issues with it. “Night Wind” is stunning, love designs of the Winds in general. Love the bright and richly coloured skies – those purples and oranges were very beautiful, the environments were stunning! As you noted, this really came across as a collection of shorter stories which were made to loosely connect. Also, good ol’ 70s-80s psychedelic designs – especially the animals. This is the one I saw when I was a child – so I now don’t think I’ve seen anything else. The one scene I remembered vividly was the fight with Ghost deBaron – specifically the sword fight section with sword vs horn. The specifics of the portrayal of deBaron as a predator (and how explicit it is!) went fully over my head, this was a creepy surprise watching it now! But clearly enough things were “off” that by the time the sword fight came - things were scary for little me and I really did not like that guy. 😭 The dub was a lot of fun, as well, quite good quality and the songs were excellent. So I recommend trying it for anyone who hasn’t seen it before. 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙
