This episode had so much to discuss! I can't wait to hear your thoughts!

I wholeheartedly agree that it was chaotic and so engaging in the best way! Nikaido is so sweet and earnest and I just love his comradery with Rei; he definitely makes Rei a better person! I definitely felt their anger at those guys trash talking Shimada – and then GOTOU SHOWING UP. I agree; they’re not in my top favorites at *all* but learning about their insanely messy and slightly toxic relationship was fascinating. I agree that Gotou is in a bad situation and emotionally compromised and why Kyouko keeps going back to him rather than just talking it out and yelling at her dad…maybe she thinks Gotou won’t do anything to her because he was Kouda’s student and feels there’s a “safety net?” I agree; they both should “know better,” but they both feel they emotionally need each other…it’s just so messy! I totally agree that I used to think it was Gotou pursuing HER, but now we see it’s kind of the other way around - sure, Gotou is using Kyouko, but at some point he tells her to go away and what does SHE do? She pushes back and is like, “Well, if you’re going to use me, you get to deal with me MORE!” and it creates this toxic cycle. I agree, though, punching Rei was NOT the correct move. Again, he should have known better and shown more restraint and maturity there. And YES, because he IS a weak man, he just doesn’t commit to turning Kyouko away. I agree, this episode made me understand Gotou a LOT more and realize why he is the way he is, but I agree that Kyouko is still a spoiled brat! Souya just winning in such a short time with those 17 moves was WILD! And Kuma’s reaction was understandable, but he REALLY is living up to his name, isn’t he?! Good note about the Rei parallels, too! I feel Rei’s learning that these players do have to rebuild themselves after a loss, but that it’s not something that Rei alone experiences and that it could be a process to grow stronger, maybe? I definitely like that he’s learning from all these different perspectives! Thank you for the comment - this was SUCH a great episode!

This episode took me completely by surprise... in a good way, I think XD As always, it's super nice to have any interaction between Rei and Nikaido because Nikaido is always so earnest and his energy contrasted with Rei's mellower attitude, most of the time, mesh very well together. Rei cares, of course he does, but the fact is simply that he won't go around rushing to chatter on Nikaido's ear *lol* It's a good thing Nikaido has all that energy! Oh, those two badmouthing Shimada made me mad. BUT, I never expected GOTO of all people to come in Shimada's defense, even if he didn't go out of his way for it. And that, really, is what surprised me the most about this chapter, the focus it had on Kyoko and Goto; while they are NOT my favorite characters on this show and I'll rather watched anyone else getting an understanding of the both of them and their dynamic is appreciated. And what a mess of a dynamic it is. Mostly, I agree with your take on the both of them. Sure, Kyoko might feel lost in her situation *but she has all the power to get out of it and move on*; so, as you say, I cannot feel bad for her, not really. If anything, I feel a bit bad for Goto, who has this persistent woman clinging to him when he was in a vulnerable situation and emotionally compromised; not that I'm defending Goto, because the fact remains that he is so much older than Kyoko and he is fully capable of knowing that what he is doing is so wrong, but I can understand him way more than I will ever understand Kyoko. It does make me wonder how much Rei actually knows about what's going on there. Kyoko kind of makes it sound as if Goto were the one pursuing her and pushing his advances. At least, that is what I used to think, so when we originally see Goto punch Rei, who was defending his sister, it came of as if Goto was just a total asshole. However, with the fact being that Kyoko is the one pursuing Goto more actively Goto getting mad at Rei for coming onto him is more understandable - though I also think that him hitting Rei was not the move, if for no other reason that he was hitting a, what? 14, 15 year old? and he was a fully grown adult at the time. Same with Goto telling Rei to keep his sister away from him when we meet him back in Season 1, which I originally though was a rich thing to say from a man that was dating said sister while being married and twice her age; now, it sounds like he genuinely was asking Rei to keep Kyoko away from him because he IS a weak man that will not do much more than a token resistance against her but who also feels really conflicted about it and doesn't want it and might even feel uncomfortable with her advances, and who was looking for an out that left him free of having to take real action himself. Just, I appreciate Goto's layers now while Kyoko continues to feel really spoiled and bratty to me XD ANYWAY, talking about shogi, well, that was certainly was an upset with Souta winning so unexpectedly. It baffles me so much how far ahead he and the Kuma guy were seeing in order to, the both of them, know that the game was over. It speaks really highly of the Kuma guy that he was able to keep on par with Souta and saw it before anyone else caught up with it, something that we saw Rei being able to alone when Souta played against Shimada. Nice parallelism there. Something that struck me when I was watching the episode was how Kuma's position has to have affected Rei because all the way through Season 1 we see him struggling with the fact that after a lose you have to go back to square one and rebuild if you have any hopes to advance. His frustration and his loneliness over thinking that he was the only one going through it. Through Shimada Rei starts to disabuse himself of this idea but I don't think he quite understood it until the older guy (I already forgot his name) said that Kuma guy needed to restart and it was only a given that he would feel frustrated about it; at least, Rei's face seemed very striken to me when he heard that.
